Francesco Bagnaia wins in front of his home crowd in Mugello.
Jorge Martin started the MotoGP race at Mugello from pole position. Although Francesco Bagnaia qualified second, a penalty for impeding Alex Márquez in practice cost him three places on the grid. This moved Maverick Viñales to second and Marc Márquez to third.
The race at Mugello was run over 23 laps this year. Initially Jorge Martin led but Francesco Bagnaia, despite starting from fifth place due to a penalty, quickly moved to the front. Third place went to Enea Bastianini, while Marc Márquez and Pedro Acosta fought hard between them in the top five.
With eighteen laps to go, Bagnaia maintained his lead with Martin second and Bastianini third. Márquez was fourth.
The leading quartet maintained their positions until six laps to go when Márquez briefly passed Bastianini. However, the Italian rider on the factory Ducati quickly took back his position and even overtook Martin shortly before the finish.
At the home circuit in Mugello, the factory Ducati team scored a remarkable result, with Bagnaia taking the win and Bastianini securing second place. Championship leader Martin finished third, while Márquez took the points for fourth place.
Martin continues to lead the championship after the Italian GP, but Bagnaia is only 18 points behind.
